Nepal-China Transit Transport Agreement Takes Effect

Kathmandu, September 8, 2023 – In a momentous event, the Nepal China Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in collaboration with the Chinese Embassy in Nepal and the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supply, came together today to celebrate the successful completion of the first import under the Nepal-China Transit Transport Agreement, originally negotiated in 2016. The event, marked by a workshop and inauguration ceremony, symbolized a significant step forward for Nepal’s international trade.

Tribhuwandhar Tuladhar, President of the Nepal China Chamber of Commerce and Industry, kicked off the event with a welcoming address. Expressing his joy at this historic achievement, he emphasized the groundbreaking nature of the goods being imported from a third country through China. Tuladhar underlined that this marked a pivotal moment in Nepal’s foreign trade and anticipated that this collaboration would expand, making Nepal’s trade and commerce more efficient and competitive, ultimately benefiting the nation.

Madhu Kumar Marasini, Secretary of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supply, urged the present businessmen to seize the opportunity presented by the successful importation of goods through China. He highlighted the importance of this milestone as an implementation of the bilateral agreement between Nepal and China, encouraging Nepalese entrepreneurs to explore opportunities for exporting Nepalese goods to third countries.

The chief guest at the event, His Excellency Chinese Ambassador to Nepal, Chen Song, conveyed his congratulations on the successful importation in accordance with the agreement between the two nations. Under the terms of this agreement, Nepal has been granted permission for the utilization of four congested Chinese ports, including Tianjin, Shenzhen, Liangan, and Zanzibar, along with three dry ports in Lhasa, Lanzhou, and Sigatse. Ambassador Song emphasized that this achievement marked a significant stride toward diversifying Nepal’s international trade. He further noted that with the continued implementation of the agreement, Nepal could anticipate improvements in infrastructure, an expanded road network, reduced transit times for imports and exports, and gradually decreasing costs—a development set to have a positive impact on Nepal’s trade and commerce.

The event’s highlight saw Ambassador Chen and Secretary Marasini jointly open a container, symbolizing the official inauguration of the imported goods. Among the attendees were Rajesh Kazi Shrestha, outgoing president of Karyaktama Sangh, and various prominent businessmen.

As Nepal takes its first steps into a new era of international trade facilitated by the Nepal-China Transit Transport Agreement, optimism is high for a more streamlined and prosperous future in the realm of commerce and trade.
