Jajarkot Earthquake Survivors Struggle with Health Challenges Amidst Winter Conditions

Kathmandu, November 28 In the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that struck Jajarkot on November 3, the plight of vulnerable populations, including new mothers, senior citizens, and children, has taken a severe toll on their health. The extensive damage to buildings, particularly residences, has left many struggling with inadequate living facilities, exacerbating the challenges faced by survivors.

With a substantial portion of the affected population forced to reside under makeshift tarpaulin shelters, the onset of winter has brought about additional hardships. Reports indicate a surge in health-related issues, prompting an increase in the number of individuals seeking medical attention.

According to the District Health Service Office, in Bheri Municipality alone, 674 pregnant women, 282 new mothers, 4,115 children under five, 2,836 senior citizens, 1,065 chronic patients, and 408 physically challenged individuals are particularly vulnerable to health challenges and other difficulties in the post-quake period.

The situation is echoed in Kushe Rural Municipality, where 515 pregnant women and 230 new mothers are grappling with substandard living conditions. Similarly, in Jajarkot District, officials report 86 pregnant women, 66 new mothers, 204 senior citizens, 15 chronic patients, and nine physically challenged individuals requiring urgent care and protection.

Nalgadh Municipality has witnessed a notable impact on 331 pregnant women and 374 new mothers, while in Barekot Rural Municipality, 181 pregnant women and 75 new mothers are among those significantly affected by the earthquake.

The district disaster management committee acknowledges the enormity of the situation but notes that comprehensive details of the damages are still pending. Authorities attribute the delay to challenges in data collection arising from scattered residential areas and the harsh geographical terrain. Local leaders have requested additional time to gather accurate information, emphasizing the need for a thorough understanding of the extent of the disaster’s aftermath.
